CHAPTER 31

CIA Headquarters

0426 Hours

Inside the nerve center, techs were manning the consoles to operate multiple grids on the wall monitor. Currently being televised were the retraced moments when Sage Whitmore outlasted the assault by the Horsemen. After spending nearly fifty million dollars to reposition a geospatial satellite to gain an enhanced vantage point over Malta and the Mediterranean Sea, they were able to home in on the entire island instead of quadrants of it, which it had done previously when the satellite was positioned closer to Tunisia and Libya. Now that they had an inclusive view of Malta and its dependency islands, they could now zoom in on any point of the country with precision clarity. Once the satellite was in Langley’s control, the techs then tapped into the digital memory to bring up the timeline of Whitmore’s escape. The problem, however, was the minimal feed they received of the island itself, with the techs only able to pick up sections of Malta prior to the satellite’s repositioning. Piecing together feeds to form a complete picture was going to be impossible, Moore considered as he stood on the upper tier that overlooked the screen. But the word ‘impossible’ did not mean that something could not be done, he told himself. It only measured the degree of difficulty.

Tapping into the satellite’s memory and the timeline of the assassination attempt on Sage Whitmore’s life, they were unable to home in on Valletta. But after witness accounts by the Horsemen as to the direction Whitmore was driving his Ninja 650 motorcycle, which was to the northwest, they were able to bring up four different vicinities on the screen to track on four separate grids.

Given the timeline at such an early hour, the roads were either empty or had light traffic. On one grid, a meandering road heading north was an empty swath, whereas one had all cars, and the other two revealing motorcycles and motor scooters. Most moved in pairs or packs. Few, however, were alone.

“Follow the single targets,” Moore told his techs. “Close in.”

On two screens, the visual aspect ratio was remarkable as the overhead view zoomed in. After the blurred images self-corrected themselves every time the program doubled and tripled their ranges, the motorcyclists appeared as though they were one hundred feet away. The riders appeared to be moving at a similarly high rate of speed on similar motorcycles, though the make of either vehicle could not be determined.

“Follow them,” was all Moore said.

Minutes later, one motorcycle turned off the main drag and headed north to Mellieħa, whereas the other continued to the northwest where he eventually turned onto a dirt road that wound its way to an abandoned structure on a hillside that overlooked the sea.

After the motorcycle disappeared under a thatched awning of some kind, Arville Moore pointed exuberantly at the grid and said, “There. Move in and focus on the structure.”
